On Friday, 6th of December, this year’s last Cancer Landscape Partners (CLP) Meeting was held, with members of the WP6 team in presence. On the day’s agenda were two talks by Carina Østervig Byskov of the CAIDX Project and Laura García Bermejo of IRYCIS / EATRIS-ERIC, ensued by a discussion session on the issues of AI in a clinical cancer context.
After the welcome by Sarah Morgan of EATRIS, a presentation by Carina Østervig Byskov on Clinical AI-Based Diagnostics followed. During the talk she explored the challenges of the use of AI in clinical settings: the industry doesn’t necessarily have the clinical need in mind, while doctors and hospitals don’t understand the algorithm behind the AI. Thus, the need for a clinical AI pathway emerges, translating the necessary expertise and language into a clinical perspective.
The second presentation of the day was held by Laura García Bermejo, titled EATRIS CONNECT: towards developing AI for pancreatic cancer. EATRIS-CONNECT is aiming to assess the applicability of the EATRIS Digital Hub in real life healthcare by developing an AI tool for pancreatic cancer, an ailment that is expected to have a high increase in incidence in Europe. The goal is to structure and document the workflow for the development of this AI-based solution in the clinical setting, and onboard the lessons learned from this tool.
The presentations were followed by a discussion session on the use of AI in the cancer clinic, any issues and positive aspects. This was another successful meeting, full of engaging conversations and interesting outcomes. We thank all the partners and participants that were present in this session, and we look forward to more meetings in the upcoming year!
